MIT reported on a robotic optics laboratory on 17 September. In a demonstration, the robot completed 50 operations to assemble a working laser cavity in no more than 30 minutes.
Assembly and precise alignment
A robotic arm moves mirrors, lenses and other components in specially marked housings. Cameras help locate the parts, while a motorised tool adjusts their angles and orientation. The cavity directs light between mirrors through a gain medium to generate laser light.
When researchers displaced components, the system autonomously restored their alignment, maintaining the laser’s intensity.
The system remains a research prototype. The team is also developing a cloud application for remote access to the laboratory; public access to such a service has not yet been announced.
The research preprint was posted on arXiv on 23 March 2026. MIT’s September report describes the results and does not establish when the experiment itself took place.
