The European Union launched a tender on July 30 to establish as many as seven AI gigafactories across Europe. The industry-led initiative is intended to expand the region’s computing capacity and allow advanced AI models to be developed on European infrastructure.
What is an AI gigafactory?
The facilities will combine advanced AI processors, software and cloud stacks, high-speed connectivity and energy-efficient data centres. They are designed for training, running and fine-tuning frontier AI models at a scale beyond conventional computing centres.
Who will gain access
The infrastructure is intended for start-ups, scale-ups, small and medium-sized businesses, industry, academia and public authorities. The gigafactories will complement Europe’s network of 19 AI Factories.
They are expected to operate under EU standards for data protection, safety, security and ethics. The Commission’s July 30 release did not name the locations or opening dates.
