An 11-centimetre robot hops using elastic rods

The UCLA and University of Michigan prototype weighs 98.2 grams. A small motor twists elastic rods, which release stored energy to propel a hop.

The system positions optical components and restores alignment after they are displaced.

The miniature biohybrid is controlled by near-infrared light and needs no wires.
