Almaty Museum of Arts has opened Central Asia’s first presentation of Christian Marclay’s The Clock. The video installation, in which screen time matches real time, is on view from September 12 to October 12, 2026.
Cinema as a working clock
The 24-hour work brings together thousands of film and television excerpts in which clocks appear or time is mentioned. Edited into a continuous sequence, they are synchronised with the time zone of the venue. In Almaty, each minute on screen corresponds to the minute outside the museum.
Visitors choose when to enter and how long to stay. The story changes with the time of day, as individual scenes form a stream of encounters, anticipation and everyday actions.
The presentation in the Al-Farabi Hall is the first joint project between ALMA and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Created in 2010, the work received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
Special 24-hour screenings are scheduled for September 19 and 26 and October 3 and 10. On other days, visits follow the museum’s regular opening hours. The four extended screenings offer access to the installation’s nighttime passages.
