Almaty Museum of Arts has opened Bill Viola: The Space of Time, the first large-scale exhibition in Central Asia devoted to one of the most influential figures in video art.

Four decades of practice

The exhibition brings together 18 works, tracing Viola’s path from experimental pieces of the late 1970s to monumental immersive installations created in the 2000s.

Highlights include The Reflecting Pool, Fire Woman, Tristan’s Ascension, Heaven and Earth and The Raft. Stations, part of the museum’s permanent collection, is presented in a dedicated Artist Room.

Time, water and human experience

Viola treated video not simply as an image on a screen, but as a spatial experience shaped by light, sound, scale and the viewer’s physical presence. His works explore life and death, memory, time, spirituality and inner transformation.

The exhibition is curated by Kira Perov, Viola’s wife and long-time creative collaborator. The Space of Time runs from July 1, 2026 through January 17, 2027, and admission is included with a standard museum ticket.
